Research Proposal

The theme that made me excited to develop is the Green Man Festival, especially the large-scale statues. When looking at the Green Man statues they appeared like monsters out of this world so I enjoyed just the look of it all.I chose to explore the wild statues at the Green Man Festival because it had so many ideas within the entire environment. When looking at the eccentric festival I knew the nature aspect would help me tremendously, the intertwining of fruits and branches had me generating many ideas. I automatically knew that the Green Man Festival would help me tap into many forms of my creativity. Nature is a big part of the festival, I immediately knew I wanted my project to resemble being one with nature, being engulfed by trees. The amount of texture within nature alone has plenty of materials to extract from. How I planned to do my initial research was to look at the Green Man statues and see what I could extract from the photos. Obviously, nature is the theme you see the most but I wanted to dig deeper and find out why they are celebrating nature. I used the internet majority throughout my research but also branched out and tried to find natural elements around my environment. One of my location visits was in Oxford. Oxford had many different types of trees, leaves, bark, and branches and it also just helped me actually visualize nature in its true form. My visit to Oxford did push my imagination further when building the project. The second location that I visited was Hyde Park, which had a lot of dainty flowers that I could use on my pages. 95% of the plants are from my visits around London, I couldn’t go to the Green Man Festival because it wasn’t running at the time but I knew taking natural elements around me would still help the initial ideas of being one with Earth. When starting my illustrations I knew what I needed to incorporate I really wanted my finial line up to have cohesiveness throughout and also an identity. The BA course that I am applying for is Knitwear, I think Knitwear will go very well with my research because I can play around with different versions of surface-based textures. Knitwear designs can support my idea of nature and the Green Man Festival. The collaborations between Knitwear and the Green Man Festival have many opportunities to create really intricate designs to further my designs.
